Whakatane Activities and Attractions
The newest attraction in Whakatane is the Mataatua Wharenui. The travelling house with the extraordinary story. The Mataatua visitor experience fuses hundreds of years of history and tradition with the latest in world-class digital technology to deliver an experience that will captivate the whole family. Check out the website www.mataatua.com
Whakatane is famous for its live volcano - White Island. You can take a boat tour or a helicopter flight to walk on this volcano (we can book these for you).
Dolphins, seals and sometimes whales can be seen on chartered boat trips. Or you may like to swim with the dolphins and seals. There are snorkelling and diving adventures around Whale Island or White Island. The Volkner rocks (a marine reserve) or even the Seafire wreck - a 44m vessel.
Hunting is also a popular sport in the area. Walking tracks beside the river (the motel is within 5 min walking distance to the river) or through native bush - all for free. Check out the new mountain-bike trails.
Kayaking, observatory, fishing from the beach or from a boat.
Want to experience tandem skydiving - only a one hour drive from Whakatane and we can book it for you.
